The meaning of Reishinkan
Our dojo’s name, 鈴心館 (Reishinkan), is derived from 双鶴鈴心館 (Sokaku Reishinkan) where Usami Sensei began his Kendo journey at the tender age of seven, in Kyoto, Japan.
It refers to the elegant and peaceful poise of two cranes; as harmonious as the sound of a Japanese wind chime in a gentle breeze. Elegance and Harmony. The beauty of Kendo is to be found in the expression, 活人剣(Katsujin ken or ‘sword that gives life’) or the mind with no arrogance.
History
Reishinkan was founded by Yoshiyuki Usami in 2011 at a small dojo in North Ryde with a small group of Kendo enthusiasts. He seeked and was given permission by the family of his late Sensei to establish the dojo under the Reishinkan banner. Reishinkan dojo is now located at East Roseville (see Location).
About Reishinkan Kendo Sydney
Reishinkan Kendo Sydney members respect each other with proper manners and etiquette, and we learn together to improve one’s Kendo techniques in a friendly training environment.
Kendo is physically challenging, but rewards us with self-discipline and mental alertness. Our focus is not on scoring points or winning competitions, but rather to continually improve our techniques and building character (formation of self) by understanding the theory and logic of Kendo (way of sword), which ultimately improves self-control and our quality of life.
Beginners are always welcome to experience this authentic Japanese way of forming “spirituality” and “self” through the practice of Kendo with the total blend of body, mind and spirit. Beginners will be enrolled in a step by step program and coached by experienced instructors.
Reishinkan Kendo Sydney is affiliated with the NSW Kendo Association under Australian Kendo Renmei (AKR) and International Kendo Federation (FIK).
